'The end of the affair', is a well written story about love and faith.'So, this is a record of hate', says the protagonist Maurice Bendix at the beginning of the novel 'The end of the affair', by Graham Greene. His hate has once been love for the married Sarah Miles. Two years after the end of their affair which came abruptly and his hate began, he hires a private investigator to observe Sarah, 'Why doesn' t hatred kill desire?'Once their love was something great also for Sarah because she he has never loved and had never made love with her husband, ''as though we ever did anything else at night but just sleep quiet.'It is often helpful to write about something one has practiced or experienced. Graham Greene (1904-1991) dedicated the exciting and well written novel to C. The letter stands for Lady Cathrine Walston a woman he had an affair with and he wrote some poems about her. 'These poems do seem to suggest it was a very passionate and very intense relationship', says Professor Neil Sinyard who wrote an autobiography about Greene. And Cathrine was his inspiration for 'The end of the affair', which the author wrote in 1951. 'I can believe only in love that strikes suddenly out of a clear sky: I do not believe in the slow germination of friendship or one that asks 'why?' Because our love came savagely, suddenly, like an actor of war, I cannot conceive a love that rises gently and subsides without a scar.'And so the story is not only about love and hate, which often comes after love is gone, but also about faith. What is it that lets two people come together? Is it a power from above or is it simply by chance? In this story it is the believing in god which has a decisive part. 'People go on loving God all their lives without seeing Him'' Graham Greene has written a really fantastic story which contains all everything you need, love, suspense and melancholy. Many of Graham Green stories have been adapted to films, like his most famous one 'The third Man' starring Orson Welles- 'The End of the affair' has already been filmed twice and surely more films are to come from this great story. 'You needn' t to be so scared'love doesn' t end.'
If you love ironic endings and twists, even at the expense of the narrator, you will love The End of the Affair. I dare not reveal to you what leads to Morris screaming at God "Leave me alone forever!", but when you reach that sentence you will have passed through a truly amazing examination of two people in adultery, based on love for one party and on dessicated lust for the other. You will see Miracles as they might have happened in this century. You will also witness the stubbornness of some who have been their beneficiaries.Though you may not believe in God, (I am an agnostic) you can hardly resist taking the side of Faith under Greene's guidance. That is his genius: whether he writes tragedy or comedy, Greene's mastery of irony appears to draw you to great truths. You need not be a Catholic to appreciate the God who enters the lives of Morris and Sarah. Even when punishing the wicked, Greene's God loves and possesses an irresistable sense of humor. This is a book that I recommend happily to anyone, if for no other reason than to get a sense of a witty, sensible Catholicism that few outsiders understand. Skip the film. Read the book.
My impetus in reading this book was that I like to read a book before seeing the movie. Since I didn't really enjoy the book, I never got around to the movie. I definitely think this is the type of book that has to be reread because so much of the beginning of the book is confusing. Once into the story, however, you realize that the love triangle is not between Sarah, her husband Henry and her lover Maurice but between Sarah, Maurice and God. This kind of hit me like a ton of bricks because I felt it came out of left field. Considering that the book was written in 1951, it has withstood the test of time. There are very few indications which would lead one to believe that almost 50 years have passed since its publication. I read somewhere that when this book was published, it was considered scandalous. In today's time, I found it boring. Since the God thing really threw me, I did some research into Graham Greene only to find out that he was born in 1904 and was baptized a Catholic in 1927 after apparently meeting and falling in love with the Catholic Vivienne. I knew that there had to be a connection between this book and the author's real life. I would liken this book to the movie The Sixth Sense. Anyone who has seen this movie would probably like to see it again just to see the clues they missed along the way. It's the same thing with this book -- I went back after finishing it and everything seemed to fall into place. Throughout the book Sarah keeps referring to YOU with capital letters. I thought she was referring to Maurice but, of course, she was referring to God. Did I like this book? Probably not. Would I like it better the second time around? Most definitely. "Eternity is said not to be an extension of time but an absence of time", Graham Greene -- End of the Affair.
A great novel, even though I didn't love the ending and I don't agree with the logic featured here, but Greene's language is just beautiful and some passages are of the kind one never forgets. One word of warning: the Amazon description of the book is a complete synopsis including the ending. Do yourself a favor and don't read it.
